Preoperative instructions for dental treatment with general anesthesia
Eating Guidelines:
To have a safe anesthetic, your child must have an empty stomach. NO SOLID FOODS OR DAIRY PRODUCTS after midnight the day before the surgery. Only a small glass of water and apple juice is allowed but must NOT be given within 2 hours of the surgery.
Medications:
Take all regular medications at usual time with sips of water, unless you have been instructed otherwise by your dentist or physician. TWO adults (one parent must be present) are required on the day of surgery. You will not be able to drive home. You MUST be accompanied by a responsible adult, and may travel by private vehicle or taxi.
For patients under the age of 12:
TWO adults (one parent must be present) are required on the day of surgery, so that one adult can focus solely on the patient during transportation. For patients of driving age: you will not be able to drive home. You MUST be accompanied by a responsible adult, and may travel by private vehicle or taxi.
PLEASE NO OTHER CHILDREN ARE ALLOWED AT THE OFFICE!!
DO NOT LET YOUR CHILD OUT OF YOUR SIGHT TO ENSURE HE/SHE FOLLOWS THE FASTING GUIDELINES PROPERLY.
Please wear loose comfortable clothing, Pyjamas recommended (NOT a onesie) Do not wear nail polish. You may bring a small stuffed animal.
Illness:
If your child should become ill a few days prior to the date of surgery or any other member of the family (e.g. fever, ear infection, cold, or sore throat or any COVID symptoms). Report any health changes prior to the appointment. Please contact our office to speak with Ashley. THE DAY OF SURGERY PLEASE PHONE 613-225-3275. DO NOT LEAVE A VOICEMAIL TO CANCEL THE APPOINTMENT!!
Physical Examination:
Your child will receive a medical examination with our anesthesiologist the morning of the appointment.
Consent:
No child will have dental surgery without a consent signed by a parent or legal guardian on the day of surgery. The mother, father or legal guardian must be present to sign the consent.
Fees
Payment is due in full the day of the surgery and can be paid by Visa, MasterCard, Cash or Debit- please verify your daily limit) (CHEQUES ARE NOT ACCEPTED) .

Post operative instructions: After your appointment
The following are recommendations for your comfort at home:
After the appointment, the patient must NOT operate a motor vehicle or hazardous machinery for at least 24 hours.
The patient may be drowsy for the remainder of the day and must not be left unattended and should be closely supervised at all times by a responsible adult for 24 hours.
Patient is not to be left unsupervised for 24 hours after the procedure.
The patient may not consume alcohol and other drugs with sedative properties or make important decisions.
Do not rinse, spit or disturb an extraction site in any way for the remainder of the day.
Do not engage in excessive physical activities for 24 hours.
Do not ride a bike, drive a vehicle or any machine operated toy for 24 hours.
Clear fluids for 4 to 6 hours (apple juice, water) Then, you should eat a soft diet for the next 2 days. For example, eggs, yogurt, soup, jello, white bread with crust removed, or blenderized foods. AVOID foods that are too hot or spicy.
Try to keep your mouth as clean as possible after 24 hours by gently brushing the teeth or wiping the mouth carefully with moistened gauze. If you are able to rinse your mouth, you can do so with warm salt- water every few hours. (½ teaspoon of salt in a 6 ounce glass of water
After dental extractions, the following may occur:
PAIN- may be expected. Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and/or acetaminophen (Tylenol) can be given as directed on the bottle.
BLEEDING- some bleeding is to be expected for the first 24 hours. Remember, a small amount of blood mixed with saliva may appear excessive. Fold a clean gauze, place directly over the bleeding site and apply pressure for 30 minutes while sitting in an upright position. Do not sleep with a gauze pack in the mouth.
SWELLING- some swelling may occur. Apply cold compress to the swollen area (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off.) DO NOT APPLY HEAT. If swelling increases after 48 hours please contact our office.
DISCOLOURATION- bruising of the skin may occur. It will disappear within a week.
SORE THROAT, DIFFICULTY OPENING THE MOUTH, OR EAR PAIN- may occur, and will begin to gradually disappear within 2 to 4 days.
